Occupational Therapy

The main focus of Occupational Therapy during hospitalization is to improve function and enable the patient to participate in the activities of everyday living.  This is accomplished by modifying the environment or adapting the activities to better support the patient’s level of function.

Treatment interventions for Occupational Therapy may include, but are not limited to:

  • Improving functional with activities of daily living (ADL’s) such as grooming, brushing teeth, bathing / showering, etc
  • Transfers such as being able to move from the bed to a chair or vice versa, and being able to get to the bathroom and manage toileting, showering and /or bathing
  • General function assessment and treatment:  to address issues including swelling (edema) and impairments in range of motion, muscle strength, sensation, and coordination of the extremities
  • Neuromuscular Re-education:  facilitating movement for patients with neuromuscular impairments (i.e. a patient who has a weaker limb due to a stroke) using specific techniques and therapeutic approaches.
  • Perceptual rehabilitation
  • Neurological rehabilitation needed following stroke or for other neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and a vast array of others
  • Perceptual rehabilitation
  • Pre-operative surgical consults
  • Splinting and positioning needs
  • Strengthening exercises and activities
  • Visual skills retraining
  • Patient and family education
  • Referral for additional services
